$50,000 Study on Pesticide Use in Boulder

An outside consultant is being hired by the city of Boulder to review the city’s current pesticide-reduction program effectiveness and provide recommendations for improving the process. The study was soon considered after the city approved two herbicides that contained potentially hazardous chemicals.

City Manager Jane Brautigam stopped the approval of the herbicides and stated she would spend $50,000 to hire an outside party to review their current procedures.  In addition to the expense of the study, funds in the amount of $26,000 will be allocated to the increased workload of the city’s part-time pest-management coordinator.  The money will be funded by the city’s Environmental Sales Tax Fund.

The Integrated Pest Management subcommittee is the group responsible for adding and removing pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, nematicides, and rodenticides to the approved product list.  Currently, the city of Boulder has approved 37 pesticides and herbicides which it plans to keep in use through the duration of the study.

Although a majority of the city officials believe that the study will provide information that will help Boulder become progressive and environmentally-safe, there are still concerns that if the current pesticides used were banned then conditions of municipal golf courses and athletic fields that generate high revenues for the city could become deteriorated.

Alternative methods such as chemical-free pesticides or botanical pesticides are being considered for park use.
