Pest Control Tips For Winter Pantry Pest
What you think may be a recent bug infestation, may be just an overlooked one. Without regular pest control treatments, bugs are able to hide well in numerous areas throughout your home.
There has been an increase in calls for a tiny, brown bug being spotted in pantries. The brown beetles feed on the dry goods in the pantry and are generally unnoticed until the stored goods get moved around. Usually the holiday baking brings attention to the beetles, resulting in being perceived as a new pest invasion.
The saw-tooth grain beetle is not only a pantry pest, they will venture to other areas in your home with there is no food. Fortunately, these bugs do not transmit diseases but can cause significant damage to leather, cotton and wools.
A pest control specialist can remove the beetle infestation with modern products and techniques. Spraying DIY products in pantries or other areas with food can potentially contaminate some items with chemicals and poisons.
Vacuuming thoroughly and clearing out old stored goods can help find the source of the infestation. A good pest control policy to implement in a household is to store packaged goods no longer than 4 months. Use the FIFO rule (First-In, First-Out).
Keep unfinished goods in a secure container (mason jar, thick plastic, metal, etc.) when storing. All crumbs should be cleared and pet foods should be store away.

California-Approved Pesticide A Health Risk To Applicators & Citizens
Methyl bromide was once the pesticide used by California farmers for conventional farming methods. Conventional farmers were dependent on the use of this product to kill pests and disease by injecting it in the soil.
For protection against the pesticide, applicators wore full-body suits and gas masks. Fields were covered by plastic tarps to enclose the toxic gas.
Several years ago, methyl bromide was only one of the many chemicals used for conventional farming in California. However, during the duration of its use, there was much controversy. Citizens were worried of its affects of the chemicals drifting to nearby public schools and lawsuits were filed as a result.
It was a battle between the growers who believed banning the usage of this pesticide would harm productivity of crops and environmental advocates that were concerned of the exposure to high toxicity levels.
The environmentalists came up semi-triumphant with the state of California posing new laws that would widened buffer zones, set limit on usage levels, and establish requirements when the chemical could be sprayed.
The new rules were not enough to assuage ecological activists and they eventually were victorious when methyl bromide was phased out by the UN treaty because of its contribution to a hole in the ozone layer. Although, conventional farmers were granted permission to use the pesticide for an extended period of time, they knew an alternative substance to protect their crops would soon be needed.
Methyl iodide became the solution to shielding California crops from pests and disease; however, the chemical was believed to be more toxic than methyl bromide. So, what allowed methyl iodide from being banned with the other harmful chemicals? No harm to our ozone layer.
And this week, among 47 other states, California approved the usage of methyl iodide despite the findings by a scientific panel. The ruling was based on a risk assessment that the pesticide could be safely used in moderation.
Will this ruling stand and prove to be environmentally safe with regulated distribution or will further findings reverse the approval and leave conventional farmers searching for yet another pesticide to maintain their yield? We’ll let the future tell the story.

Pest Control Treatment for Citrus Trees
Citrus trees not only bear fruit but pests that will damage foliage and possibly kill the tree. Gardeners only hope is to find the most effective pest control technique or product that optimizes controlling the bug population while minimizing the harm to the plant.
Aphids, citrus leafminers, or Asian citrus pysllid are the most common pest to be seen on citrus trees in San Diego and Riverside County. These pests eat the leaves from the trees and stunt the growth rate of the injured leaves, often deforming their shape.
Eventually the bitten leaves will fall from the tree, but while they remain attached they can do plenty of good for your citrus tree. The green tissue in the leaf continues to produce sugar, providing energy for the tree.
In San Diego County, aphids are more prevalent in the spring and feed on newer leaves. The aphids suck the sap from the new leaves and excrete droplets of sugary liquid called honeydew. High population of citrus leafminers in San Diego and Riverside are seen summer through fall but does not affect the growth or fruit production of mature trees.
To continue harvesting a healthy crop without the damage caused by pests like theses, follow these pest control tips:
- Keep all foliage on trees except for severely deformed leaves that protect the pests.
- Check trees at least once a week when they produce new growth. Inspect for signs of pests (e.g. feeding).
- Spray trees with water at medium-power everyday for a week to reduce the aphid population. Aphid-preying insects, like ladybugs, will not be harmed by the water spray.
- If using chemical spray, use a targeted pesticides so beneficial insect are not harmed by the residue on foliage.
- Avoid chemical treatments when possible. Usually, only young trees need chemical treatment to survive.
Keeping your citrus trees healthy in San Diego is possible by strictly following these pest control guidelines. Pro Pacific Pest Control offers botanical pesticides that are 100% organic to reduce the harm to our environment without compromising the effect of the pest.

Bed Bug treatment for San Diego County Residents
San Diego County is not an exception to the recent invasions of bed bugs in all types of living spaces (apartments, single-family dwellings, etc.) and commercial buildings. Reports of infestations, coming from all over the county (Carlsbad, El Cajon, Escondido), have shown that bed bugs are a serious problem in San Diego.
The growing problem has been linked to an increase in travel, the reduced use of harmful, yet effective pesticides like DDT, bed bugs immunity to some pesticides, and the increased use of pesticides that target specific pests allowing others, including bed bugs, to survive.
Other U.S. states are in a panic from the epidemic and have requested assistance from the Department of Defense. Ohio has contacted the Environmental Protection Agency to get permission to allow banned pesticides for bed bug invasions. Also, sold out expos and summits have been hosted to show demonstrations of modern techniques that are effective in fighting against these pests.
Bed bugs can live in mattress seams, bed frames, box springs, crevices or cracks in walls, behind wallpaper and other furniture. Although there is not a direct correlation with bed bugs and dirty living space, clutter does make it easier for them to dwell.
When travelling, leave luggage outside hotel room until the room is inspected for bed bugs. Upon returning home, inspect clothing and luggage and immediately wash clothing and dry in high heat.
Bed bugs hide deep in wall cracks and crevices so many sprayed pesticides have no effective. Currently, Pest control operators are using heat devices that will bring the temperature in a room up to 140 degrees which has proven to kill the bed bugs.

Natural Pest Control Techniques Used At La Jolla Apartments
When bugs invade your property, the most logical next step would be to consult your local pest control company. At this apartment complex in the La Jolla, the property owners took matters in their own hands to remedy their bug problem.
The complex is made up of two complexes on a 30 acre lot that was suffering from an infestation of aphids and mites. These bugs were creating homes in the landscaping surrounding the buildings and ruining the greenery. The complex owners wanted a pest control solution that would be safe for the tenants and the environment but effective against the bugs.
The owners decided that releasing thousands of ladybugs onto the property would fit their want of a zero pesticides control method perfectly. The ladybugs prey on the aphids and mites to provide more of a balance between the “good” bugs and “bad” bugs with no chemicals involved and ultimately removing the bug problem. Tenants were told not to worry about the infestation of ladybugs in the area because this specie was not prone to entering homes.
The ladybugs were supplied by a company that buys the bugs from collectors in Oregon, California, and Montana and stores them in refrigerators at 35 degrees. At this temperature, the ladybugs will go dormant and can stay alive for five months by eating their stored fat. In transit to the complex, the bugs warmed up and had an appetite to prey on the aphid, mites, and other bugs that weren’t too quick to catch.
While this is one route to take regarding pest control, Pro Pacific Pest Control offers more feasible organic pest control solutions to protect your family and home from chemicals and effectively getting rid of bugs. “Green” pest control techniques and methods are a current popular choice and they are available from Pro Pacific. Pest Prevention Rates Increase for Napa Valley Vineyard Owners
The Napa County Board of Supervisors passed an increase in an assessment for pest control and disease prevention. The increase will reflect $2.50 more an acre to protect the vineyards from infestation from pests such as the Vine Mealybug.
Vineyard owners know the importance of pest control and the consequences that could arise without the protection, so they are not hesitant on paying the new total assessment of $8.22 an acre. All owners with at least an acre will pay the assessment annually.
The vineyards are the leading stimulant of the economy within Napa County, so growers feel the increase is a small price to pay compared to losing an entire crop or the vines from infestation.
The common pest seen as a problem this year is the Vine Mealybug and it is reported to be seen in three areas in Napa County. Fortunately, the new assessment will go towards reducing this pest’s presence in Napa Valley using chemical-free techniques.
Scientists have identified the pheromone the female bugs use to attract the male. The male bugs can fly and will find the females that can’t fly by their pheromone.
The county is using pheromone dispensers to confuse the males in search of a mate therefore causing them to not mate thus reducing their population. Grape growers are pleased with this technique as it remedies the problem without releasing harsh chemicals into the environment.
The pest control program has been successful in the previous years and has received an overwhelming amount of support from grape growers. The program has expanded to protect and other pests and diseases and provides inspections of all incoming nursery products. If the products contain any signs bug infestation, they will be turned away.
It is important to protect your property and assets from bugs as the damage they cause can significantly devalue the property and the price for repair is far more expensive than pest control services. Call Pro Pacific Pest Control today for a free inspection of your property to save you from a serious pest infestation.

$50,000 Study on Pesticide Use in Boulder
An outside consultant is being hired by the city of Boulder to review the city’s current pesticide-reduction program effectiveness and provide recommendations for improving the process. The study was soon considered after the city approved two herbicides that contained potentially hazardous chemicals.
City Manager Jane Brautigam stopped the approval of the herbicides and stated she would spend $50,000 to hire an outside party to review their current procedures. In addition to the expense of the study, funds in the amount of $26,000 will be allocated to the increased workload of the city’s part-time pest-management coordinator. The money will be funded by the city’s Environmental Sales Tax Fund.
The Integrated Pest Management subcommittee is the group responsible for adding and removing pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, nematicides, and rodenticides to the approved product list. Currently, the city of Boulder has approved 37 pesticides and herbicides which it plans to keep in use through the duration of the study.
Although a majority of the city officials believe that the study will provide information that will help Boulder become progressive and environmentally-safe, there are still concerns that if the current pesticides used were banned then conditions of municipal golf courses and athletic fields that generate high revenues for the city could become deteriorated.
Alternative methods such as chemical-free pesticides or botanical pesticides are being considered for park use.
Pro Pacific Pest Control is conscious of the affects that certain pesticides can cause to our environment, that is why we are constantly reviewing products we use and abiding by industry regulations on pesticide use.
