Riverside Pest Control Proposal Declined by Voters
The Northwest Mosquito and Vector Control District will not be providing service to 70 percent of the city of Riverside after property owners voted against the district providing service in their area. While about 30 percent of the city is already in Northwest’s service area, this attempt was to bring in the rest of Riverside.
The Northwest District provides service in their covered territory for mosquitoes, bees, rodents, and other pests; they also do regular checks for the West Nile virus. The city’s public works responds to complaints outside the district’s service area but provides limited services and does not test for West Nile or treat for adult mosquitoes.
The vector-control district would have cost $8 a year to single family dwellings on a lot of an acre or less and a greater charge to larger properties and densely occupied areas. Additionally, the vote of property owners with large properties counted more since the votes were weighted depending on how much the property owner was charged for the services.
The 49% in favor (57% before vote weighting) for widening the vector-control district area came as a shock since the pilot survey showed overwhelming support for the venture. The results defeated the proposal but city officials hope to run the vote again.
Poor economic conditions were blamed for the defeat of the proposal.
Riverside City Councilman Mike Gardner states, “(Vector) is able to provide a better service than the city can, because they’re so much larger and have so much more equipment.”

$50,000 Study on Pesticide Use in Boulder
An outside consultant is being hired by the city of Boulder to review the city’s current pesticide-reduction program effectiveness and provide recommendations for improving the process. The study was soon considered after the city approved two herbicides that contained potentially hazardous chemicals.
City Manager Jane Brautigam stopped the approval of the herbicides and stated she would spend $50,000 to hire an outside party to review their current procedures. In addition to the expense of the study, funds in the amount of $26,000 will be allocated to the increased workload of the city’s part-time pest-management coordinator. The money will be funded by the city’s Environmental Sales Tax Fund.
The Integrated Pest Management subcommittee is the group responsible for adding and removing pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, nematicides, and rodenticides to the approved product list. Currently, the city of Boulder has approved 37 pesticides and herbicides which it plans to keep in use through the duration of the study.
Although a majority of the city officials believe that the study will provide information that will help Boulder become progressive and environmentally-safe, there are still concerns that if the current pesticides used were banned then conditions of municipal golf courses and athletic fields that generate high revenues for the city could become deteriorated.
Alternative methods such as chemical-free pesticides or botanical pesticides are being considered for park use.
Pro Pacific Pest Control is conscious of the affects that certain pesticides can cause to our environment, that is why we are constantly reviewing products we use and abiding by industry regulations on pesticide use. Pro Pacific strives for the betterment of our environment by offering chemical-free and botanical treatments for your pest problems. Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite-Pest On The Rise This Year
According to the 2010 Comprehensive Global Bed Bug Study, there has been an 81 percent increase in calls regarding bedbugs since 2000. The study was conducted by the National Pest Management Association partnering with the University of Kentucky. Their findings reported that 67 percent of the 1,000 pest management companies they surveyed have done at least one treatment for bedbugs in a hotel or motel.
Bed bugs are most commonly found in hotels and motels but reports have shown that 90 percent of the pest control experts surveyed have treated for these insects in apartments, condos, and single-family dwellings. The insect can travel to travel to multiple units in connected dwellings via electrical wiring, plumbing and adjoin walls.
The increase of bed bug reports has been pinned to the increase in human travel. The bugs can easily hide in personal belongings or luggage after staying in infested lodging thus bringing the pest into your home upon return from travelling. Also, bed bugs require very little to survive and can live for over 6 months without eating. They can hide in small cracks and crevices, bed frames, box spring, furniture, and mattresses and schedule their feeding times when the host is asleep.
Although bed bugs do not transmit any diseases to humans, their bites may itch or cause an allergic reaction to some people. The initial bite is painless thus resulting in many people being unaware of any infestations. Some signs of bed bug infestation can include several small bites on the same area of the body and blood spots on bed sheets.
Inspect all bed sheets, linens, and furniture for signs of infestation and keep all travel gear on hard surfaces at a hotel until the room has been thoroughly inspected. If clothes have sightings of bed bugs, they should be washed in hot water and all storage for the clothes should be vacuumed.
Bedbugs are difficult to treat without the appropriate techniques and tools and can quickly spread with each female producing up to 200 eggs in about 9 months. Pro Pacific can inspect a property for bed bugs and provide the extensive treatment needed to clear your home from these pests.

The Defensive Side of Pest Control- Rodent Proofing
So there once was a cat always devising a master plan to capture a mouse that shares the home the cat lives in. The relentless cat repeatedly attempts to have the mouse for a meal but always comes up unsuccessful as his plans backfire causing him all sorts of injuries. You can find the cat in casts and crutches or having singed hair from his boomerang plans. Is this story starting to sound familiar? Of course it is, that clumsy cat and clever mouse are from “Tom and Jerry”, the cat and mouse cartoon classic. Although the show is a cartoon and far from reality, Tom portrays the perseverance we have to rid our homes of mice.
Jerry may be an adorable mouse on the show but rats and mice can do more harm than good to your homes and family. They can gnaw through boxed pantry items to consume for nourishment and contaminate your food and food-preparation surfaces with their excrement which carries the bacteria that causes food poisoning (salmonellosis). Rodents and the parasites that can live on them can easily spread diseases.
Rodents use our homes for shelter and food and can gain entry by an opening only ¼ inch wide. Plastic sheeting and screens, wood, drywall, and insulation are no match for a rat or mouse’s teeth to gnaw through and begin to make your home a mouse haven. Also, a mouse is capable of chewing through wiring which can pose as a serious fire hazard to your property.
Pro Pacific Pest Control can inspect your home and draw up a defensive plan to keep your home pest-free. Our plan is to identify any problem areas that may attract rodents to your home. Our techs will cover any opening that a rat can use to gain entry to your home with wire mesh and other materials that cannot be gnawed through. All the corners of doors, windows, and screens will be covered with metal to prevent the rodents from making a crevice.
In addition, the lawn is another area to target for rodent proofing. Piles of wood or brush can be an ideal place for rodents to nest and hang around your property. Also, branches that hang over your roof can provide easy access for rodents to enter your home through roof vents. These areas or situations should be properly managed to prevent an infestation. Our trained technicians can spot any potential areas that could be welcoming to rodents and effectively keep them from entering your home.
So, call Pro Pacific today for a free rodent proof inspection and estimate to put an end to the mouse-chasing days.
